Anyone boarding a train would enquire about its destination.
But in the matter of an important journey in life, many of us
hardly show such discretion. We join a programme of study, complete
it and then ask the question, “what is ahead?”.
We should draw a roadmap that would lead to the best possible
career keeping following points in mind. 1. Don’t choose
your career simply for the money
Although the economic factor must come into play when making
a career decision, it shouldn’t be the sole determining
factor. It is unwise to think of your career solely in terms
of “where the oil is flowing”.
2. Avoid the “bandwagon effect”. Don’t jump
on anybody’s bandwagon. What is good for Lagbaja may
not be good for Tamedun. For some it has been described as
the “Feel Good, Rave of the moment or Go with the flow”
factor. Everybody seems to rush for the hot career choices.
One has to be careful because when faced with either insufficient
career guidance, or an avalanche of confused or conflicting
career “misguidance” information, jumping on the
bandwagon, seems the easy way out.
3. First and foremost, you must answer the “Who Am I”
question. What are your interests, abilities, hopes and ambitions?
You must know who you are. What interests you? Ideas, people,
or things? Are you more of an I' or a 'we' person?
Are you more stability or change oriented? What is your fundamental
driving force? What's most important to you? Self -awareness
is key to making wise career choices.
4. It should be obvious that your passion is key. Be honest
and sincere with yourself: how passionate and committed are
you to a chosen career It is your passion that can sustain
you when you come across hurdles. It is your passion and interest
in your chosen area that can make both the opportunities and
challenges work for your benefit. If you don’t have
the passion, you have to motivate yourself; otherwise nothing
that anybody or I can say will be enough to motivate you to
surmount challenges that may come your way. When you have
the passion, you become creative in handling opportunities
and challenges.
Try to capitalize on opportunities. When there is a new task
to be undertaken at work doyou run to the bathroom and hope
that by the time you get back it will have been assigned to
someone else, or do you jump on the opportunity to take on
additional responsibility?
We are constantly being given opportunities that will utimately
affect our fate. We have to be able to see eyond the immediate
gratification (or lack of it) and
"bet on the come".
The key to gaining control over your time and consequently
where it's used is having a detailed schedule to work from.
Not just a haphazard schedule with a smattering of activities
throughout the week or month - a schedule that is born of
thought and consideration.
How can we organize our time to make it stretch the farthest
while simultaneously producing less stress than our haphazard
approach?
If you don't put some thought into how and when you make
room
in your schedule for certain duties, you will find that your
schedule fills up with a smattering of unrelated events that
have you spinning.
Las but not least “Planning effectively is bringing
the future into present so that you can do something about
it now”. So plan well and use given time effectively
and stay ahead!
